Plays Well With Others

Adventures in NY: Part 4

This was probably the most exciting day of my trip. Morning began quite early at 5:30AM, when I headed down to Rockefeller Center and th NBC Studios where the Today Show is taped. I saw the entire cast – Matt, Katie, Al, and Anne. While standing there, I was handed tickets to the Maury Povich Show and so I had to leave the Today Show before getting any good photos of the hosts.

A van drove a group of us to the Maury Show, where we were led inside by a member of his staff, the audience coordinator, Lauren. The first show taped ws about “Women Telling Their Abusive Husbands to Hit the Road” – very Jerry Springer. The seond show taped – yes we had to sit through two shows – was about kids with terets syndrome.

Here are a couple of things I learned about the show. First, Maury isnt that nice to the audience, he doesnt spend any time with us. Basically he comes out to introduce the show and leaves when its over. Second, the studio/set is much smaller than it looks on television – but they all are. Third, his staff cues us (the audience) when to clap, when to at outraged, when to go “ahh and ohh” – otherwise they are constantly signaling for us to shut up. Not very welcoming – I enjoyed seeing a show taped in person though, something I was always interested in.

My next stop was at the NBC Studios for a tour, which was very short, but cool. We saw the Dateline studio, NBC News with Tom Brokaw studio, Saturday Night Live studio., Later Today studio, and also the Rosie O’Donnell studio, which is about half as large as it appears on TV. its all camera tricks make all the studio look larger.

Tonight was my broadway show – Death of a Salesman. A magnificent show, anything I say couldnt do it justice – in fact, Richard Gere was in the audience. After the show, I hung out by the stage door and was able to get the entire cast to sign my Playbill, including Brian Dennehy. Pretty exciting night.
