Plays Well With Others

In the year 2000 …

My Horoscope for Today*:
Words could fly like missiles all around you, particularly at work. Fortunately, agile Geminis know how to duck, so you should remain unscathed. Just don’t join the battle. Later on, enjoy friendly exchanges with an old pal and your mate or partner. You will end the day in a far better frame of mind than you started it.

Do you all realize there are about 80 days until the year 2000? I still can’t believe that the year is nearly over … not only the year, but the decade and millenium at the same time. And then today, the six billionth human being was born. I guess it would be cool to be number six billion … or to even know what number you are. Like am I five billion, four hundred twenty six million, two hundred sixty seven thousand, four hundred fifty one or am I lower than that.

Anyhow, Les and I were talking about how the end of the year was coming up so soon, and then ended up talking about what kinds of things we thought we would have accomplished by this point. Everyone out there has probably at some point or another thought about what their lives would be like by the year 2000. For example, I used to think that in the year 2000, when I’m 26-27 years old, I’d be married, not really have kids yet, but maybe I would have traveled a bit more and would be living outside of the Bay Area. So how much have I actually accomplished? Not much of it. I’m not really unhappy though. I dont really feel like I’ve actually found myself yet. Yes, I know that sounds lame … what does that mean you haven’t found yourself, were you lost or something?

I guess what I mean is that I’m still in the process of figuring where my life is heading, where I want to live and what I want to do for the rest of my days on earth. Sometimes I feel like there should be so much more and maybe I just haven’t found it yet. Does anyone know how to find yourself … does a light just go on some day and everything falls into place? I just dont know.

Anyhow, the group of us hopes to spend the turn of the millenium on a yacht in the San Francisco Bay, celebrating safely and together. Hopefully it’ll all pan out … At first we thought it would be lame to spend it in San Francisco, but then got to thinking how some people would kill to spend the turn of the millenium in this city. People that live in Idaho, or Clarksville would die to be in San Francisco, or New York, or Los Angeles, or London, or Australia or anywhere besides where they are. The fact that San Francisco would be on that list makes it a cool place to spend the turn of the millenium. I guess we just are never happy where we currently are.

Those wacky chefs! Have you ever wondered what would happen if the chefs of the world united and took a stand for a higher wage. Well, today they went berzerk. So how do chefs protest, you might ask? Well, these guys decided to pelt the police with eggs and flour, to prove a point. I can just hear them now. “If you dont give us a higher wage, we wont put a cup of suger in the pie, we’ll only put a quarter cup of sugar in the pie … we’ll show you!” God how pitiful is that. Just seems a little funny … the pissed off chefs union. I suppose they have just as much a right to be on strike … but throwing eggs and flour, give me a break!

So, I hate endings. I totally cry when good shows end. Like tonight Road Rules ended, and when everyone starts saying goodbye and starts crying, I’m weeping right along with them. Not only when shows end, but any kind of ending. I think it’s mostly when other people are crying, it starts me up.

By the way, I didnt cry when I left my job. Actually I had the biggest smile on my face.

I think I’ve mentioned in previous journal entries how I have a list of about four journals I check out on a daily basis. Some for inspiration, some for just plain fun. I like reading about what other peole are doing with their lives … it doesnt have to be exciting, just things they’ve seen, heard or read. It’s almost like watching a sitcom, or a soap opera in a way.

Anyhow, it seems like most of the ones I read are on some sort of hiatus right now, sort of like I was for ten days or so. We’ve all reached a point where we’ve run out of things to say, or there is so much to say, we just can’t find a starting point to type it all out. So, to say the least, I’m disappointed that my journal friends aren’t updating, but at the same time, I totally understand why.

Today is Columbus Day! When I was younger I remember having Columbus Day off of school, and now it’s a postal holiday, but nobody else observes it. Actually for some reason I remember getting a ton of holidays in elementary school, like President’s Day, and some others. Strange.

Anyhow I spend today, my first day of unemployment, doing some miscellaneous things. For example I returned the Cargo Van I used for the weekend, and ended up walking the two miles back to my house. The walk was actually nice and refreshing, but for some reason I always drive it. Got me to thinking how I should walk more. When I was a non-driver, I used to walk miles a day … everywhere I would walk, whether to the mall, or to work. Then I got a car and the use of my legs seemed to stop. So I think I’ll walk more.

After the car return, I dropped my laser printer off at CompUSA for service. The damn LaserWriter Pro 600 comes up with this message “temperature malfunction”. Basically, the thing won’t heat up … and if it doesn’t heat up, then the toner wont stick to the paper and well, then it’s not really a printer anymore. So that cost me about $100, just for them to look at it and repair it. Of course, if they need to order a part, then they’ll charge me for the part too. The printer probably isn’t worth as much as it’ll cost to fix it, but a new printer is at least $1000, so I’ll stick with this.

I spent the rest of the day working on a midterm, that is so boring and impossible. For example, she asks a question like “Explain federalism and how this major facet of the Constitution continues to be a source of controversy, using three examples of structures and three examples of processes of our system currently in the news. Be sure to discuss of the relevance of Amendment 10.”, then restricts us to no more than 200 words. So I started typing out the answer, and 750 words later finally explained the whole thing. Now how the hell do I edit it down to 200 words.

The next question, however, I can barely scrape out ten words to answer it, and she wants a million freaking examples, all under 200 words. Got I hate school.

I love simulation games. I’ve played SimCity since the beginning, and now just bought SimCity 3000 which is wicked fun. I get to build a city, zone areas for garbage and airports, and pass ordinances. I like it. In fact, I have to go play now.

Question of the Day:
Are there any computer games that you are addicted to? Let me know at the message board.
