Plays Well With Others

Moving Days …

I’m sure you can guess by the title that I’ve found an apartment. I got a call this morning from Kara, letting me know that the apartment was ours if we wanted it, all I needed to do was call the apartment manager. I called, and he is having us meet him at 7AM tomorrow morning. That’s means I need a good night’s sleep, so I dont sign my life away in a half awake/asleep stupor.

I’m already looking around at all my stuff and thinking about what needs to be packed, what needs to be moved, what I need help with, who I need to call to move things; it’s all very exciting and stressful at the same time.

We can actually start moving things right after signing the lease, which I’m totally not prepared for. Kara on the other hand, is raring to go, and has probably packed everything she owns already. I believe she is planning on moving everything this weekend. I’ll follow in the next couple of weekends.

I got the strangest comment today from Katie, regarding my journal. Seems some of you find the elipses difficult to read around, and emailed her about it; like she’s the boss of me.

I’m doing my best to do this entry without any elipses, but it’s very difficult since I do this as a spilling of thoughts, rather than typing from a rough draft. So, those elipses represent when I’m thinking but not actually writing anything, and not they happen without me being aware of it. In fact, I’ve had to delete them everytime I do it, that’s why you aren’t seeing any.

But my real point is that if there is something you’d like to see changed on the journal, or something that bothers you, or even something you want to know about.. please, please, please email me about it. Althought Katie and I are friendly, she’s far from being my mother. I’m not going to get mad if you make a comment, I’d hope you’d know me well enough by now, to know I dont get mad very easily.

I found out something very interesting about people today at work. See, my assignment today was to photograph employees for the company directory. Basically a page about each employee, containing their photo, and answers to a small list of questions.

Well, without any prior notice I began walking up to people and telling them I was taking their picture today. Well, most of the guys were willing, while a small few made me take retakes, and an even fewer wouldnt cooperate. The women however, all bitched and moaned.

“You didnt give us any warning”

“Wait, wait, wait, I have to put lipstick on”

“There is no way in hell you are taking my picture today, maybe next week but not today”

I heard every excuse in the book, and in the end, I got practically all the photos taken. I mean, I work with some really gorgeous girls, but they get all crazy when it comes to taking a photo. The craziest thing is, even on a bad day, most of these people are pretty photogenic; unlike me, who is allergic to cameras. But, as allergic as I am, I took a photo and even got the guts to post it here. I’m wearing my company hat and scarf, which might score me just a few more brown-nosing points.

There is a little something I’ve learned working for the Vice President of the company. Always be on your toes. I mean she is really layed back and easy-going, but people still act a little differently when she walks in. For example, we were all there late tonight, and she walked in and mentioned how impressed she was that we were all still working, and it makes everyone silently think: “Whew, thank god I didnt leave on time tonight; scored a few points”

We were working late, all doing our jobs, each with a beer on our desk. Now, in normal corporate america, beer at the desk isn’t allowed. In a startup atmosphere, it’s tolerated. When the VP walks in, it’s best to stick the bottle under the desk. Luckily, our VP looked around, mentioned how everyone was drinking, and then said, “I’m going to pretend I didnt see anything; I’m turning a blind eye to all the beer drinking”.

See, in startup companies, you can get away with just a little more, mostly because everyone works their asses off, and because there aren’t too many company policies in place yet. We are growing, and I’m sure there will be a point when a company policy will arise, but I’m not sure the beer drinking will be a part of it, afterall one of the big things on the “want list” for our new headquarters is for them to build a “pub” onsite.
