Plays Well With Others

Tea and crumpetts, anyone?

Tea and crumpetts, anyone?

How did you spend Mother’s Day? Some have traditions like a Mother’s Day barbeque, while others go out for a brunch. My sister and I have tried all of the above and are looking for unique new ways to spend it. Last year, we went to a tiny little old home that had been converted into a restaurant because my mom loves stuff like that. This year we went to a tea parlor, more my sisters idea than mine, to have morning tea.

The place is an old home in which the rooms have all been converted into tea rooms, along with cabinets filled with teacups, teapots and everything tea related for purchase. My mom’s dream come true. She just started collecting teapots and so this was a paradise for that sort of thing. Small teapots, large teapots, ornate teapots and simple teapots and teacups to match from wall to wall.

We sat down at our table and the lady servers were dressed in period costumes, with the little white apron and frilly dresses. She placed our napkins on our laps and handed us the set menu for the day. Another came along and poured our minty-lemon tea into our ornate cups. Not really a guy thing, but this wasnt a guy day. We were served a plate with two scones, two egg salad filled croissants, a fruit cup, a small quiche and in the center a strawberry cheesecake. Sip your tea, nibble some food, sip some tea, nibble some food … erm, yeah right. So, I quickly grabbed up all of the egg salad filled croissants, because no one else wanted them and traded away my scones. Although real men dont eat quiche, I ate up mine because I was hungry and there werent many other options. We were the first in the room, but it quickly filled up with other families until it was packed. I’m also far from a tea drinker, but I managed to gulp down about half the cup. I love ice tea, but regular hot tea just seems to make me thirstier. Anyhow, the event was a smashing success, because mom loved it and walked up with a little teapot as a souvenier. Like I said, all that matters is that she liked it because its for her special day.

Afterwards, we walked the main strip for a little while, an area filled with small boutiques and some larger outlets like Pottery Barn and Gap. I’m not quite sure what they were looking for but it must be that girl thing … strolling in and out of stores for no real reason other than to see the insides of every store.

Anyhow, another Mother’s Day success …
