Plays Well With Others

Don’t stand too close

Don’t stand too close to a naked man …

As usual, May brings along the annual Bay to Breakers walk in San Francisco, a 7.5 mile walk beginning downtown, heading over a few hills, through some neighborhoods, passed Golden Gate Park and ending up at the beach. You know, just your average stroll.

Those that take this seriously make sure to get a spot way up front, so they can win a metal [face it, the Kenyans always win], while those that are less serious sit back and enjoy themselves or get naked, afterall this IS San Francisco.

It all starts out at about 7:30AM, when we gather outside the downtown Hyatt. Looking around, you’d think it was a parade of some sort, more than an actual marathon. Thousands of people as far as the eye can see, waiting to begin the trek. Some in costume, some dressed for a long walk, and some, well, undressed for the walk, as shown in the photo above [Eww much, I mean, good thing they wore those hats, wouldnt want them getting burned].

The crowd waits patiently for the start bell to go off, while tossing tortillas up in the air like a frisbee. I think I got whacked in the head by a whole pack at one point. I guess it was worth it, because now I can tell people I got hit in the head with a flying tortilla. When else could I say that??

The bell went off and about 2 and a half hours later, we arrived at the finish line. I prefer to speed walk the race because then I actually get to see the sites and, more importantly, not die of a heart attack. There are tons of really neat costumes like the rolling bar, that is actually a functioning bar serving margaritas and beer, along with wiring for a television. I’d hate to be the guys pulling that thing. And of course, there is always a naked man walking in front of me, it never fails. My advice: Dont stand too close to a naked man.

The walk ends with a stroll through Golden Gate Park, one of the largest man made parks in the world at over 1000 acres, and then a half mile walk to the Ocean Beach area. I think proceeds from the walk go to charity, and it helps the thousands of people who travel from all over the world get in shape … well, for a day.
