Plays Well With Others

Bush’s tax refund plan …

Yesterday I got my notice informing me of my tax refund from the government. The notice says “5% of your taxable income or $300 for single people, $600 for married people, whichever is less”. I’m getting $300. Woohoo.

Actually, less than woohoo. I think its the most ridiculous thing ever sent through Congress. This is what a republican president does for this country. I really dont think $300 is going to make a difference in the lives of too many people, and for most of us, we have already become resigned to the fact that the money is gone and the government has it.

Here’s the lowdown. The refund will end up taking $35 billion out of our surplus federal budget. Tack on another $35 million just for postage to send out those checks. Oh, and add on another $70 million for printing related costs. And then there’s the salaries of all those people working overtime to get the checks out. And in the end who benefits the most from this but the richest people. Afterall, if 5% of your taxable income is less than $300, you won’t be seeing that much, which is what boat quite a few Americans are in right now. Quite a few are going to get $100 or less refunded to them – the penalty for not making enough.

All that work Clinton did to actually get a budget surplus and Bush comes along and is probably going to throw the nation into debt again. After all he wants to start giving money to religious organizations too. The problem I have with this is not that I’ll be getting money back, just the way they are going about it. I think most Americans, if had the chance to vote on it, would opt for other alternatives than getting a refund check. Perhaps a 5% deduction on our next income taxes, which would have saved millions of dollars in printing and distribution costs, or perhaps forgetting the refund all together and just putting it towards schools.

For most people, the 5% kickback isn’t going to enrich their lives much and face it, if you are poor, you’re still going to be poor because you probably won’t be getting a refund check. If you are rich, $300 is probably going to buy you lunch for the day. Just another lame move by Bush and his party towards ruining our country. All people had to do was look at his father’s record and they’d know what kind of President he’d end up being. Ugh.

Anyhow, maybe I’ll pay a bill with it or something.

I don’t get a damn refund. My dad gets mine because he claimed me as a dependent. Ugh.
