Plays Well With Others

Illegally legal …

Yesterday, Mexico’s President Vicente Fox came into town to discuss his idea of letting illegal immigrants work in the US legally. Basically his idea is that the United States should work to make all the people who came here illegally, now become legal by giving them the proper documentation. He also feels that U.S. companies should be able to hire Mexican citizen’s, who would get a work permit of sorts to allow them to work in the U.S. without an problems.

Now, I think this is a big load of crap, personally. First of all, if people are entering the country illegally then they shouldn’t be rewarded for it by handing them paperwork and sending them on their way. They should be deported back to where they came from. That’s the law. Why bother creating them if we arent going to enforce them.

Secondly, though, is that hundreds of thousands of legal U.S. citizens are currently losing their jobs due to the economic downturn. Do you really thing this is a good time to allow citizens from OTHER countries to work here? Like that isn’t going to cause some kind of backlash. I mean, its hard enough getting a job these days just competing with U.S. citizens. Can you imagine how hard it could be if people from Mexico were also fighting for those jobs.

Thirdly, I believe that the U.S. should work with other countries to develop relationships, but at this point, I dont see much of what Mexico is offering us. I mean their President came to California a few months ago saying how he wanted to work with California to get jobs for his citizens and now he’s going to the White House for the same thing. We already run some of our biggest sweatshops over there, and probably account for a good percentage of the jobs abroad, and now he wants them all to come to the U.S. to work too.

I just think this is bad timing and a bad deal. I dont think we need more illegal people coming into our country taking away jobs. Ugh.
