Plays Well With Others

The Big Day …

I have to go back in time a little bit to let you know what happened as the big day got closer and then we’ll go into how the big day went. Here’s a little background …

On Wednesday of last week, Wifey™’s brother flew in for the wedding. I had to work, and Wifey™ managed to pick him up without too many problems. He’s fourteen and this was his first plane trip, so he was just excited to be on a plane, let alone come into San Francisco for the first time. Lots of firsts on this trip.

The rest of the week was filled with some last minute errands like getting our tuxes fitted and Wifey™ had to get her nails done. Lots of loose ends to wrap up before the wedding. And as Friday approached, the question of “are you nervous yet?” started to get on my nerves abit.

Seems, people WANT you to be nervous. They ask and ask and ask until hopefully at some point you’ll say yes. Up to the wedding, I think Wifey™ and I didnt have a nervous bone in our bodies. There’s just too much to think about up to that point.

Friday night Wifey™ stayed with my mom and my sister to do the girl stuff. Or at least the girl stuff would be happening very very early in the morning, since we were having a 10:15AM wedding. I can only say on my end, Friday night was all about sleep. It’s what her brother and I did.

Saturday morning, aka. THE BIG DAY, came pretty quickly. I got up around 7AM, and was served breakfast by her brother right away – some eggs and toast, which hit the spot and didnt weigh me down or make me feel like throwing up. Around 7:30AM my best man arrived at the apartment to help with last minute things like going over paperwork, and making sure I had everything I’d need for the day. It actually was nice having someone around taking care of things. I still wasn’t nervous.

We all got dressed around 8:30AM, just in time for my usher to arrive with his wife to get us to the Japanese Tea Garden by 9:30AM. The day was slightly overcast and cold, but this was THE BIG DAY and at this point, there’s not much you can do about the weather so you might as well get over yourself and have a good time.

We were the first to arrive, right after the photographer that I’d hired online. I asked him about the weather and he said it was PERFECT for taking photos, because the sun wouldnt be in anyone’s eyes and we wouldn’t see the weather in the pictures anyway. As I talked to him about where photos would be taken, the family started to arrive. I talked to aunts and uncles all vying for the perfect spot to set up their tripods for their video cameras and it started to sink in that people were going to be capturing every moment on a tape for posterity. Still not nervous … a little.

Everyone made sure to let me know that the girls had arrived and as my mom entered I went over to hug her and she immediately started bawling. Okay.. mental note.. leave mom alone. People began to get into place and even though the minister was running slightly late, we got rolling at about 10:20AM. The minister and I stepped into place and signalled for the music to start rolling.

Here’s something about the music. I went over it with my mom’s friends husband right before the wedding and told him exactly how to do it. He gave me that “yeah, yeah, I know, I know” type of thing and I figured he had it. So what happens when the time comes. He puts the wrong song on.

So, the first couple walk down to the wrong song. Then, as they figure out its the wrong song people start trying to fix the music to the right song, so the second couple start walking to no music and then people start waving at them to stop until the right song comes on. Ugh. Okay, at this point, I kind of blanked out. Basically, the second couple got up with a little of the right song and then Wifey™ came up with the correct song.

So, Wifey™ gets up to where the minister and I are standing – and she looked great. But then no one turns the music off. So the minister whispers to us “is anyone going to turn off the music?”. Wifey™ and I are standing there trying to get someone to cut the music off and no one does anything for a bit. Finally the music gets cut and we get into the ceremony part of things, which went rather smoothly, aside from me not being able to remember what to repeat half the time and Wifey™ putting the ring on the wrong finger. Yeah, aside from that it went smoothly. Luckily we were going for a picture perfect wedding and not a functionally perfect wedding. See in pictures it will look perfect.

Now as it came time to take photos, I realized that hearing my name being called out from a million different directions becomes annoying pretty fast. Half the time I’d be talking to someone and I’d be hearing my name from somewhere else. Ack. I can only be in one place at a time people.

The pictures went perfectly – I couldnt have asked for a better photographer. He was awesome. He posed us and knew exactly what would work and what wouldnt. Trust people you meet online, so far none have done me wrong.

After the ceremony, we went to my car which was covered in tissue and a “just married” sign. Very neat. Wifey™’s brother opted for my sister’s boyfriend truck – a raised Chevy Tahoe with huge wheels and a built in TV that folds down from the ceiling, hooked up to a VCR and playstation. How could we compete?? Hmm.. a souped up Tahoe with a playstation or a dressed up CRV.

Anyhow, around 12:30 we headed to the reception for some fun. The restaurant was beautiful and I got to see quite a few people that hadnt been at the ceremony. It was great. We had great music and alot of fun … and perhaps I’ll describe the reception in fuller detail in another entry. Coming soon … Part II along with photos.
