Plays Well With Others

I learned alot this weekend …

I’m sitting here listening to that Superman song by Five for Fighting. It’s really a cool song. For some reason I can’t get enough of it. Of course, as with any song I like, my radio station plays it to death, until you start finding yourself hating it. Ugh. Why do they do that??

Anyhow, it was a busy weekend of going out with family and friends to various get togethers. I hardly feel like I had a weekend, but here I am back at work, so I guess one happened. I did learn a bunch of stuff though over the last few days that I thought I’d share with you all.

I learned how the tradition of tossing the bouquet and garter started …

Saturday morning bright and early we met up with some friends of mine that will be getting married in February. I’m going to be their best man and they had invited Wifey™ and I to go to a bridal show put on in their home town. Now, when I think of bridal shows, I think of something big happening at an exposition center, so you can imagine that I was slightly disappointed to arrive at the local historical society to see a room one exhibit of weddings throughout the years. Once inside though it did turn out to be a little interesting. We read all about the customs different races have regarding their wedding ceremonies and where some of the traditions of our weddings began. For example, tossing the bouquet actually started about a century ago when the bride and groom would retreat to their bedroom after the reception had ended and the wedding party would follow them up and try to pull their socks off. Once off, the person with the sock in hand would toss the sock over their shoulders and try to hit the bride or groom on the nose with it. Our present day version is to toss the garter or bouquet. All I can say is that if someone had tried to pull my socks off after a long, tiring day like that, I’d be putting the smackdown on someone. That’s all I have to say about that. Overall the place was pretty interesting and I guess I should be thankful that it didnt turn into an all day event.

I learned that videos of kids are only cute when they are your own …

Later on, we had a family function to attend in honor of my aunt’s birthday. Not really a birthday party, because my aunt wouldnt have gone, so instead it was a get together and if you happened to bring a gift or something, then that would be even better.

Anyhow, Wifey™ and I arrived with my mom, sister and her boyfriend. Wifey™ and I had brought the wedding albums to show those who were interested, which of course, everyone was … or at least pretended to be. See, the thing about photos is that they are interesting if they are yours but can be a little boring if they arent. It’s kind of a struggle I’ve been having regarding these photos. I mean, there are probably 200 total to look through, and that’s condensed from the 500 we had originally. Most people look through them quickly, which is probably how I’d look through them. I mean, they are fun for ME to look through, but other people would probably get bored after the first fifty … if not sooner. Anyhow, after the photos, they turned on some video they’d shot. We all thought it was a school play or something so we didnt mind. Unfortunately, it ended up being video of them goofing off. Ugh. Boring much. My aunt, their grandmother, insisted that the video be shown in its entirety, however halfway through, about twenty minutes, the kids turned it off. They must’ve seen how bored we were.

Here’s a lesson to everyone: Don’t show family videos to anyone that isn’t in it. No one cares. Just dont do it. Wifey™ and I won’t even show our wedding video unless people ask for it, and even then I’m ready to shut it off at a split second. I know how boring it is. Nothing like a home movie to kill a party.

Anyhow, one thing I did get out of the evening is that my love for antiques has grown stronger. They collect and restore antiques and I fell in love, so as soon as Wifey™ and I gather up some fundage we’ll hit the antique places in search for a bedroom set.

I learned that having six degrees of separation from Keri Russell (Felicity) ain’t a bad thing …

Sunday evening we headed over to my father and stepmother’s house for dinner. We were supposed to be there around 4PM and didnt end up arriving until about 5PM, just because we were running late. Ugh.

The purpose of the trip was to show them our wedding photos because they hadnt seen them yet and to have dinner over. Prior to looking at photos, they’d given us some gifts which were pretty cool. One was a plate that was designed by the same lady that designed our cake topper, Kim Anderson. Neat stuff. The second was a frame with our names and wedding date written on it, made by my stepmother. Also, really nice. The third was the best of all given to us by my stepmothers sister, who passed away just a couple of weeks ago. It was a chinese bowl that she had in the cabinet in her dining room. I’m not big on a lot of chinese things, but this was really nice.

We then had dinner, talked all night and about the time we were getting ready to leave my stepmother tells us to watch Felicity. Huh? Why? Apparently, my stepsister is going to be Felicity’s new roommate, Gabby. I’m a little unclear about when the start date is, but it should be cool to see her on the show. It’s her first role in a series, after doing tons of bebe, Coke and Sketcher’s commercials, which I think I’ve mentioned before in this journal. Anyhow, keep an eye out for her.

Oh and by reading this.. you are all within six degrees of separation of Keri Russell. Woohoo!!
