Plays Well With Others

TLC …

I remember when we first got cable television attached to our console television. It was amazing. Of course, it had been out for years and EVERYONE had it before us, but when we did get it, it felt like a whole new world had been opened up to me. Before that we had only a handful of channels to deal with and when I couldnt find anything on, I’d go outside to play. I know, it’s a hard concept to get a handle on, but try to stay with me.

Overnight we went from having maybe ten channels to having about fifty or so. A channel dedicated to music videos, a channel dedicated to cartoons, another just for news, and yet another for reruns of old shows. It was amazing. Suddenly the big three weren’t important anymore and now I really had my MTV.

The reason I bring this up is because I totally remember when The Learning Channel first came out and how it was the last channel I wanted to watch. I mean, I spent my whole day at school. Why the hell would I want to come home and learn some more. Puhleeeeeeeeeez! I had better things to do with my time.

So, let’s fast forward a few decades. Ugh. And here we are in 2002 and I’m totally hooked to The Learning Channel. They’ve really come a long way and have some great shows. In fact, when I have a day off, it’s the only channel I watch all day long. The whole personal TLC lineup alone has me hooked for at least four or five hours.

In case you dont watch, here’s a few shows worth mention. They start off with a Dating Story. This show is basically where a mutual friend hooks up two people to go on a blind date. It follows them getting ready for it, and then the final date. It’s pretty easy to spot when people are and aren’t having a good time. And if you are into that sort of thing, a great way to watch two people interact. Some people are such idiots its amazing they’ve made it this long.

Then there’s a Makeover Story. Yeah, it’s pretty girly, but interesting to see the before and after shots of what people look like. It’s amazing what a few pounds of makeup, hair gel and having a fashion coordinator along can do for your image.

After that it’s time for a Personal Story. It’s all about getting your body medically changed in some way with either reconstruction or surgery. People go in for everything from new teeth to a face lift to saggy boobs. Again, interesting to see the before and afters. What’s funny is how people act once they get something like a tummy tuck. The doctor cuts out like 40 lbs of fat from someone’s stomach, so they are obviously thinner, but still weigh alot. Of course, then they go out and start buying skimpy clothes and stuff which isnt going to look good even with part of your stomach removed. Just seems funny.

Next up is the Wedding Story and then the Baby Story, which is pretty self descriptive. Anyhow, the best show in my opinion is Trading Spaces. Two sets of neighbors switch houses for two days and get a designer and a budget of $1000 to remodel a room in their neighbors house. They dont get to know what it looks like until its all done.

The designer pretty much do whatever the hell they want to the room, including painting your furniture. They all have their own styles, and most could care less what you want. Some people end up liking it, and some end up not liking it.

The other day this lady started bawling because she hated it so much. Hahaahaha. Hilarious. You MUST watch this show. It’s also the inspiration for the makeover, Wifey™ and I are giving to our bedroom. Which, by the way, I’ll probably be uploading photos over the weekend of what we’ve done. The before photos didnt turn out too well, but you’ll get the idea.

The wedding is right around the corner, actually it’s this weekend, so tonight I’ll be getting my tux fitted and then Friday I’m taking a day off of work to go to the rehearsal. Then Saturday is the big day and Sunday I have another day off. There will definately be more details on this on Monday or so. I probably won’t get a Friday Five up, but I’ll try. We’ll see.
