Plays Well With Others

9/11: Years Past …

Yesterday, I was looking through the archives of this journal that I started in June 1999, and began wondering what I was doing all those other years on September 11th. I found those entries and thought I’d excerpt some of them here.

September 11, 1999:
“Yesterday, I attended a wedding for a friend, which was absolutely fabulous … probably the best so far. They fed us pasta, beef, salad, bread, and rice..all very good food. Plenty of dancing … and great fun. I’ve got one more wedding to go … then I’m free for a while … “

This is the anniversary of some friends of mine. They were married on September 11th. Strangely enough, I’d just returned from a weeklong vacation that began on September 4th and ended on September 10th. I had been in New York. In fact, one of the final things I did the last day I was there was to visit the World Trade Center. I actually spent a few hours sitting in the courtyard area, sitting right next to that giant globe in the fountain. My exhaustion from walking all around the city got the best of me, and I made a decision to not go to the observation deck of the World Trade Center that day. Just didnt have it in me. Instead, I spent a couple of hours sitting between the two towers just amazed by how tall they were.

I took tons of photos and to this day can’t find that particular roll of film. Found all the others, just not that one.

September 11th, 2000:
Update on my illness. I dont really think they are trying to make me better at this point. I mean here we are into the third week, and I still feel horrible. The red splotches are gone, but now I cant swallow. Like imagine trying to swallow and not being able to. Thats how it is.

Ack. This sucks.

I actually uploaded three entries that day. Two about my mystery illness and one that Wifey™ wrote. Fun times. Basically, I’d spent the three weeks prior slowly dying at my home while the hospital attempted to figure out what I had. Six medications, a sonogram, a nuclear test and being jammed in that long tube where they xray your entire body later, they still had no clue what I had. All I knew, is that I hadn’t eaten in three weeks, I was only drinking a few drops of water per day and I wasn’t in the best shape. The final hospital visit my mom threatened to take down the doctor if he didnt admit me … which he did. After a week of intensive care, I was better … and twenty pounds lighter.

September 11th, 2001:
How do you describe what happened today? I dont think there are words that can. America has been attacked and a couple of our national landmarks have been damaged or destroyed. I’m in a state of disbelief right now that this is even happening in MY country.”

I think we all felt about the same on this particular day.

The neat thing about this journal is that I can go back in time and read about exactly what I was doing on a particular date in time. Sometimes it’s nice to be able to do that. I suppose it could come in handy, should I ever get interrogated for some reason.

“Where were you on September 11th, 2000?”
“Erm, dying.”
