Plays Well With Others

It Could Have Been Us …

I’ve said it before. News sucks. In other countries, when you watch the news, you actually get news from all over the world. In America, when you watch the news, you get news about America … and maybe some two-second spots having to do with other countries. And don’t get me started on local news.

As we’ve all heard about, there’s been a “sniper” on the loose in the Maryland-Virginia-Washington DC area. Our news has called him “The East Coast Sniper”. I’m sure in the east coast he’s just “the sniper”, or maybe the “motherfucker that’s killing people for no apparent reason”.

Well, the last couple of days has produced some results. Two guys, a father and stepson, who the police believe are these “snipers”. What’s even more interesting is that they lived in Washington state … on the WEST COAST. Hmm, that should be enough for our local news to sink their greedy little teeth into. Finally, they can link these guys to us (because you know the world revolves around us). They live on the West Coast. Well, that’s not quite enough for our little local news team. They did some investigative work and found out that the older of these two guys lived for two months in a Bay Area cityÚten years ago. TWO fucking months, TEN years ago. Did he even have time to move furniture in? Of course the reporters go to the neighborhood and stand in front of the house and shoot LIVE shots of the neighbors standing around going “It could have been us”. Erm. Not really. How the hell could it have been you? The guy was shooting people over two thousand miles from his Washington state home for Gods sake. Why the hell would he suddenly shoot the people in his neighborhood.

If that’s not enough, they then start shooting footage of the old military base in Monterey, called Fort Ord, where the guy trained. The problem. There’s nothing left of the fucking military base. It’s a California State University now. They reporter did manage to find one abandoned, boarded up military building left Ú good for his LIVE shot.

I believe the local news spent about ten to fifteen minutes on these LIVE shots and news stories detailing how the guy lived in the Bay Area for two months and trained in Central California. Basically, if they dont have a Bay Area link, a California link is good enough for the local news teams.

My question is why does everyone have this “It could have been me” attitude. Is it to make themselves feel more involved in some way. I remember when the “sniper” shot the bus driver, they kept showing this black girl saying that she always takes that bus and “it could have been her”. Erm. It wasn’t you so get over it.

So, the “snipers” are caught. They lived in Washington, so I’m sure the Washington local news has the house surrounded and are screaming that it could have been them. He lived in the Bay Area for two months, so our local news has his neighborhood surrounded screaming it could have been them. I’m sure there are local news outfits around the country linking these guys to them and screaming it could have been them. I mean, they obviously drove across the country, so that pizza place they stopped in or the Motel 6 they stayed the night in could have been a target too, right? Not.

A part of this case I don’t understand is that the police had such a hard time catching these guys, yet these guys practically had a red arrow above their heads the whole time. And where the fuck did the white van theory come in? They were found in a blue CAR, not a white VAN. They did make it easy for the cops to find them though. “Hi, we’re over here. We robbed a liquor store in Montgomery. Check it out. We left finger prints all over the place.” Yeah, finding them was like finding a needle in a haystack, alright. How did the cops ever figure it out.

Let’s run it down: The guys called the police and told them about the Montgomery robbery. They then called a priest and detailed the robbery in Montgomery. They left numerous notes for the police and called them a few times. The police put out an alert on the radio and TV for this blue Chevy Caprice with New Jersey plates that they believe these guys are driving. Instead of ditching the car and trying to get away, these guys fall asleep in this car at a rest stop, out in the open for ANYONE to find.

My question is, who really solved the case? Personally, I believe if these guys didn’t basically give themselves away with all of their clues, the cops would still have NO CLUE. I know right now the law enforcement agency is patting themselves on the back for a job well done, but in reality, all they really did was to follow the clues that the “snipers” themselves were giving them and then carried though by arresting them. Seems to me that the “snipers” just gave themselves up, in a round about way.
