Plays Well With Others

For Rent …

Another busy weekend in my household. Sometimes it seems like the weekend just kind of pass me by and all I’m left with are blurry images of what happened as I sit at work, yet another day. Kind of like a dream.

For those people that read this, you’d know that Friday nights are considered “date night” in our household. We avoid the computer and try to do something fun to end the week. It’s not always something extraordinary, usually a movie (rented or at the theater), or a dinner (takeout or dine-in). We never really set rules for it, just that we’d do something together that night. It’s been our tradition since we got married and we’ve done it every night since.

Because of our pending “busy weekend”, we opted to grab some Mexican food at Tres Amigos and watch a movie that Wifey™’s boss had lent her — MI2. The first half of “date night” had been spent surface cleaning the apartment and then it was time to chow down. We got through half the movie when the phone rang and pretty much ended date night. A return call from the friends that we’d be spending Saturday with.

Saturday morning we woke up early, finished cleaning the house and then went to Trader Joe’s to grab some scallops and sauces for dinner that night. Trader Joe’s is a specialty store in this area that has all those foods you can’t find anywhere else at really good prices. It’s not really a ritzy store, just that it has specialty items. We try to go there a couple times a month.

Around noon, our friends arrived and we headed out to catch BART — SF’s version of the subway. The ride, although loud and bumpy, got us to the theatre in about fifteen minutes, where we’d be seeing the musical, RENT. They were paying for us, as part of an anniversary gift.

They both brought binoculars, and we needed them because we were literally in the last row of the theatre. Not only the last but the highest. There’s no possible way we could have gotten farther away, unless we’d been outside the theatre. Surprisingly, we the view from up there was not that bad and with the binoculars you could actually see their nosehairs. Before the show started we actually were reading some of the sheet music from the piano on stage. The problem with try to watch a show with binoculars is that you can’t see what’s going on on stage except for what you are focusing on. So in that sense, it’s a little distracting.

As for the show, it was good. Not the best I’d ever seen, but not the worse. Sort of average on my scale. I actually had a hard time following the story because the music was so loud, combined with them singing everything loudly. Some of what they were saying sounded like a blur. Without the Playbill, I’d probably still be lost. Like I said, it was a good play. I just found myself getting distracted easily because of my loss of focus. Of course, I’d recommend that anyone interested in seeing it, check it out and decide for themselves.

After the musical, we all headed to our apartment, where Wifey™ and I made dinner. Wifey™ baked up a chocolate cake, while I made the fettuccini and scallops. Threw together a sauce made of cream of mushroom, sun dried tomatoes and artichoke hearts. We added a salad and some bread slices, so it was a pretty simple dinner. Afterwards we retreated to the computer room for a game of SIMS. Wifey™ and I don’t play much anymore, but my friend doesn’t have the game, so he loves to come over and build a house.

The next day, Wifey™ and I stayed lazily in bed until around 10am and eventually got out of the house at about noon. In the next six hours, we did our laundry at the laundromat and built an ottoman for our living room. A few weeks back, we sewed some armrest covers for our chair and sofa and had some leftover material. A lot of leftover material. Enough, to cover a small ottoman. If we only had one to cover. So, we built one. And it turned out really nice. Almost professional. So now we have an ottoman to go in front of our chair. It’s rather cool.

And now it’s Monday. Where did the weekend go? Ugh.
