Guilty Until Proven Innocent …

I don’t usually discuss local news in here, because most of the people that would come in here to read this would have no clue what the hell I’m talking about. Of course, every now and then our local news becomes national news and then it’s journal worthy.

So let’s discuss the Peterson case — Scott, Lacie and Connor. It started out as a small local story about a missing pregnant woman in Modesto. She’d gone out for a walk with her dog, while her husband went fishing. When he got back, the dog was loose and the woman was nowhere to be seen. It showed up on the news as a missing woman story — like many others do.

During the next few weeks and months, the local media went into a frenzy trying to figure the case out. Where could she be? What happened to her? Would she return before giving birth?

And then there’s Scott. I certainly didn’t want to point fingers at anyone, but the guy just didn’t act like someone that had a missing wife that could be dead. He sells her car, he tries to sell their house, he hides an affair, he basically tries to continue living his life like nothing happened …

And then these bodies float onshore, right where he said he’d been fishing many months ago. Now, I’ll give it to him … it could be someone whose followed the story trying to frame him. I mean, it’s not a secret that the cops were searching that area for the bodies. Anyone could’ve dumped those bodies in there … but it would have had to have been months ago.

And then when these bodies do show up, rather than fly home and try to find out from the police if they are his wife and son … he’s off playing golf in San Diego, with his died hair and goatee and $10,000 in cash in his car.

Now, I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. As the saying goes, “innocent until proven guilty”. But damn. This guy is as guilty looking as OJ was, when he killed his wife. Alot of people have concern that it’s just the media twisting things to make him look guilty. And at first, I was concerned about that too. I mean, they focus so much attention on this guy and what if it ends up not being him. Then, they’ve basically ruined his life.

Unfortunately, as time went on, he started to make himself look guiltier. I mean, why would he sell her car only months after she was declared missing. Most people have trouble getting rid of a deceased person’s clothes, let alone selling the car of someone that was just missing. Even fishier is selling it to buy yourself a new truck. I could understand selling it because you couldn’t afford to make the payments, but to buy yourself a new truck. Something just don’t smell right.

Then there’s the case of the house. I could understand selling it if the bodies had been found already. Who’d want to live in a house that you shared with a wife and soon-to-be child who have been found dead? Way too many memories? But to sell it only months after they were found to be missing isn’t normal behavior in my opinion.

So what would be “normal” behavior? Well, in my opinion, if it were me, I’d be so involved in finding my wife and newborn that the police would have to get a restraining order against me. I’d probably hire my own detectives just to find out what happened. I don’t think I’d change my appearance, carry around $10,000 and play golf on the California/Mexico border the week those bodies washed ashore 500 miles away.

To be fair, I wasn’t there. I don’t know what happened to Lacie Peterson or her unborn son, Connor. Only Lacie and the person that killed her know what really happened. I guess only time will tell whether Scott did it or not. All I can say is that all signs are pointing in his direction right now and whether he did or didn’t do it, his life will never be the same again.
