Plays Well With Others

The Art of the Journal Entry …

I’m often asked, “What is your technique for writing such wonderful journal entries?” and I reply, “It’s just talent, I guess”.

Okay, no one ever asks me that, it just sounded good to start this entry out. Actually, for me, writing a journal entry is sort of like throwing up after a night out drinking. You spend the day doing stuff, you get home and remember bits and pieces and although it’s a bit hazy, you hit the keyboard running and just type whatever comes to mind at the moment. I never prewrite anything. What’s the point, really. I basically start out with a blurry, fuzzy idea of what I’m going to write about and then let it flow. Which probably explains why half the entries in here are crap.

I have a million ideas a day for entries. In fact, most of the day, as I’m performing my routines, in the back of my head, I’m coming up with entries. The problem, I find, is that when I find time to get to the keyboard, I can’t remember any of them. A sort of performance anxiety. Who knows.

Back in the day, when Commixion was just a little tot playing with the big kids, there was a group of us that played together in the sandlot. We’d do guest entries for each other, we’d do some crossover entries, we’d talk about each other. It was fun. It’s where I got to know Katie.

For the past two years, the group sort of shrunk down to just Katie and I, and although we talk through email or phone, we don’t really talk about each other much in our journals anymore. What’s the point really. We’ve got our own lives going on.

Well, recently two old friends from back in the day re-entered the journal world … older, wiser, more mature … and although, we won’t be doing what we did before, I’d like to welcome them back and invite you to take a look at their journals/weblogs. So here you go. Welcome back, Krysten and Tim.

I’m all about getting a deal.

I think the hunt is often more fun than the actual purchase sometimes. When I make a big purchase, I often research it so long that the model I was researching is no longer new. That’s what happened with the digital camera I just bought. Orginally, I was researching a Nikon digital camera.. that was over a year or so ago. Just last month, I finally made the decision to go out and actually buy a camera. A Canon digital camcorder. Not what I’d originally set out for. But I’m thrilled with my purchase and glad I waited. Not only can I take movies that I can import into my computer, but I can also take really nice pictures. What more could I want. If I’d followed my heart a year or so ago, I’d have a digital camera with no movie functions. So, it just goes to show you that you shouldn’t buy on impulse.

I’m also a big fan of the consignment store. You can find some really cool shit in those places, and if you play your cards right, you won’t be paying full price. When Wifey™ and I need some furniture, the first place we go to is the consignment stores in our area. One of the nice things about living in the Bay Area is that there are a lot of wealthy people. And wealthy people tend to buy stuff and then get tired of it rather quickly … sending it to the consignment store. So it’s not hard to find some designer furniture that is hardly used for a fraction of what you’d pay a designer.

So, what could be even better. Well, free stuff. I’m always wary of free stuff, because I always wonder why it’s free. Did someone take a crap on it? Why would you give away perfectly good furniture. Well, when it came time for Wifey™ and I to move, we realized right away why you’d give away stuff for free. an example would be a desk we had that we couldn’t hardly give away. No one wanted the thing. So, we put it out on the sidewalk one night and by the next morning it was gone. Free.

And that’s why this weekend, we are taking a two hour drive to another location my company has for their yearly surplus furniture giveaway. The stuff might just be crap, but we are on the hunt for some new office chairs. Mine doesn’t really work right anymore, and Wifey™ has been using a folding chair. So, it’s about time we get some chairs. For free.
