Plays Well With Others

More Politics …

With the President’s State of the Union speech over, it’s time to get on with the business of finding a replacement. I personally only watched snippets of his speech as, to me, he’s as exciting to watch as it is to see paint dry. I’ve pretty much looked to the internet for some of the highlights of his speech to catch me up and see how he keeps justifying spending more and more money that we don’t have.

The first part of his speech had to do with the “War on Terrorism” and his justification for spending billions of dollars on his own little agenda of getting Saddam out of power. Until September 11th, his presidency was pretty much going downhill. He didn’t really have much of anything in his court at the time and he was busy trying to figure out how to get into Iraq to put down the guy that called his daddy names. On 9/11 everything changed and suddenly he could blame the world for it and start putting his plan into place to get a war going and then capturing Saddam. The problem I have is that with all the money we’ve spent on “making America safer” … personally, I can’t really say I feel a hell of a lot safer. I don’t feel unsafe. But I also don’t feel invinceable. I sort of feel the same as I did before 9/11. Like, if something’s going to happen, there’s really nothing we can do about it. There are a lot of hoops to jump through these days and perhaps some of them will help in the long run, but, in my opinion, if someone truly wants to do harm and destruction … they’ll figure out a way to make it happen regardless of how much money we’ve spent on protection.

The economy was covered in the next portion of his speech. Basically, it’s sucked since he got into office. I don’t know if we can truly blame him for the economy taking a crap, but at the same time I think more could’ve been done to keep some people working in America rather than companies exporting them to India and beyond. And most of the economic help has gone to big businesses anyhow. The little guys out there are still feeling it. Bush can’t relate to how the average American is dealing with the job losses and plunging 401k nest eggs. He’s so busy trying to give tax breaks to corporations and increasing dividends to the wealthy. Ugh. His speech mentions cutting wasteful spending and then yesterday’s news says that he’s increasing the money given to NASA for his mission to mars plans. Hypocrisy is what it is. Do we really need to be thinking of sending people to the Moon and Mars right now, when our economy is in the crapper and we ahve a record-breaking deficit. I don’t think so.

And then finally, in a section called Society, his speech covered the “average American”. Ugh. I hate that. Like he knows anything. Maybe if he spent a day in the Average American’s shoes living their life, he’d understand. Somewhere in his speech he mentions giving more government money to religious organizations and such, which I don’t really agree with. Personally, if he wants them to have money, then he should get out his own checkbook … not ours. He also wants to pass an Act describing that a marriage is between a man and a woman … basically meaning that gay people couldn’t be considered married. Again, I don’t agree with him. A marriage should be considered valid as long as the two people love each other. Period. I don’t care what you are.

Anyhow, I’m ready for someone new to come into office. The part I’m having trouble with is figuring out whom to support. I’m at the point where anyone is better than Bush, but from what I’ve got to choose from, I just can’t take a stand either way. There isn’t anyone that really stands out, except Howard Dean, who, although seems like a lunatic at times, might be what we need to shake things up a bit. He’s lost some of his momentum after that cacuss in Iowa but hopefully will get back on track. And if he doesn’t move forward … well, I’ll find someone else to support. Anyone is better than Bush.
