Plays Well With Others

Gay Marriages in San Francisco …

The act of civil disobedience in San Francisco was coordinated by Mayor Gavin Newsom and top city officials and was intended to beat a conservative group to the punch.

Longtime lesbian activists Phyllis Lyon, 79, and Del Martin, 83, were hurriedly issued a license and were married just before noon by City Assessor Mabel Teng in a closed-door civil ceremony at City Hall, mayor’s spokesman Peter Ragone said. The two have been a couple for 51 years.

I’ve got to be proud that San Francisco is at the forefront of such things. I’ve always felt that marriage had nothing to do with gender, but about the love between two people. I think ANYONE should have the right to get married, whether they are gay or straight. And along with that marriage, they should get all the same rights and privileges that a married couple gets.

I just don’t get it sometimes. You get people like Bush, who try to force on people that marriage is only for a man and a woman. Thus saying that if you aren’t in a man/woman couple then you don’t have the right to get married. Ugh. Makes me sick in a way. We have the right to choose who we want our partners to be and we should also have the right to get married to that partner. Most gay couples last longer than heterosexual couples anyhow, so what’s the problem.

Anyhow, for me the news is good news that we have a Mayor that’s willing to buck the system and do what’s right for a change. I really think having a Mayor in San Francisco in his mid-30’s is going to do a lot to help the city become more forward thinking. We need to get rid of all of these old people that run government and get some progressive, young people in there to move our country forward.
