On The Down Low …
Although it’s been around for years, lately I’ve been hearing more and more about a certain percentage of our population being “on the down low”. The phrase refers to black men who have sex with men, but don’t consider themselves bisexual or gay. These guys usually have girlfriends or wives who have no clue that their partner is out having sex with other men.
Personally, I think these guys are bisexual. They want it both ways without outwordly saying that they are bisexual. They want to have their cake and eat it too … and still call themselves straight men.
Experimentation isn’t a problem. And if they did it once to try it out … I’d say, fine, maybe you’re just seeing what’s out there. But for these guys to continually go out and have sex over and over with men and then go home and have more sex with their wives or girlfriends, I’m sorry but you are a bisexual man. You can call yourself whatever you want … but in the end it doesn’t change the fact that you are continually having sex with both men and woman. Anyone that has sex with both genders on a continual basis is bisexual and if you can’t come to terms with that then you are in denial … not “on the down low”.
Anyway, I’ve heard of this a few times and was watching one of those Oprah After the Show things and thought I’d mention my point of view. It just drove me crazy to watch these black men claim that they are straight men and then in the same breath also state that they had sex with both men and women on an ongoing basis. Put any name on it you want, you’re still getting it at both ends. Not to mention that you’re exposing your unknowing wife or girlfriend to the possibility of STDs or HIV.
Yeah … on the down low. Whatever.
