Plays Well With Others

How Long Is Too Long…

I just have to wonder… what’s an acceptable time to be out of work due to a layoff before you start to look like a loser?? We have a friend that’s been out of work for going on three years now. Ugh.

He’s a computer guy, but never really had a job as a computer guy. It’s sort of his hobby, wanna be a job type of thing. In his job he was like an administrative assistant. However, during that time he’d been taking courses and studying to become a tech support type of person. Then he got laid off and continued to take these courses. During the three years off of work, he’s had a couple of contract positions that have lasted less from a couple of months to less than a year. None have really lasted. Soooooo you kind of have to start to wonder if it’s just him that’s not working out. I mean usually if you have a contract position and you’re good at it, they’ll keep you on. In fact, he recently went to a training seminar for IBM, where they flew him out to train him. Then they brought him back to work and a week later he was jobless once again.

The thing that gets me is that he won’t take a job at Target or anywhere just to make some money. Well, it’s probably his wife that won’t let him, but nonetheless, I’d be taking ANY job just to make some money. They explain it as… if he’s got a job, he won’t be able to take time to look for one. Or, they won’t hire him because he can’t guarantee he won’t leave when he finds something better. Erm. It’s TARGET. It’s not like they expect you to make it a career. At the most a summer job or something.

It’s just annoying. I was out of a job for six months and by that point, my application was already filled out at Target. In fact, I got an interview call from them the same week that I got the job at the big investment corporation I work at now.
