Plays Well With Others

KFOG Kaboooom…

Last night we saw some fireworks put on by a local radio station. They do it every year as a thank you to the City and to the listeners that support them. Every year it grows larger.

We got a late start on Saturday, by waking up at 10AM — which is VERY late for me. I like to get up by 8 on weekends, just because getting an early start usually gives me enough energy to get things done. Alas, it didn’t quite happen that way. Luckily we really didn’t have much planned for this weekend. I don’t think we actually left the house until about noon, where I got my hair cut finally — a nice buzz — and we went to the car wash. The poor car hadn’t been washed since before our move and was looking really embarassing to drive around in. Anyone that owns a black car knows that when it’s clean it looks like a million bucks, but dirty it looks like it needs to be towed. So we had them do the big job — a clean, a wax and thorough vacuuming. After that we bought some sandwiches and came home to relax before heading out again later on.

Around 4ish, our friends came over to hang out some more and then around 6 we headed out to catch our train into the City. Once in the City, we grabbed a bit to eat a little Greek hole in the wall. They gryo’s we good… like little greek burritos. We also met up with some of our friends’ friends while in the City, so we had a little group of six, which was cool.

So once we bought our food, we headed down to the Embarcadero where the festivities were. There are a couple of options available, since large speakers are set up all along the wharf. You can either head to the actual pier where the station actually sets up, which includes booths for food and fun, or you can set up anywhere along the water where a speaker is located. Last time, we actually sat on the pier, which was tough because the ground was concrete and when you get old like us, you end up with a backache. This year we opted to sit on a grassy patch, where we’d have a great view of the fireworks over the Bay Bridge (not the Golden Gate Bridge).

We actually hit the grass early enough to find a decent spot, because within an hour there were thousands more people in the area all trying to find even the tiniest patch of grass to sit on.

I’m not big on fireworks as a general rule, but I love to people watch. And there’s something really cool about the fact that this many people can get together and just hang out and have fun. People just enjoying fireworks, singing along to song, clapping their hands — just having a good time. Most of the people weren’t even drinking, which makes it even cooler. Personally, for me, if the only way you can have fun is to grab a beer, it seems kind of pathetic. To each his own I guess, but the people I hang out with are able to have a blast… and remember it in the morning.

Anyhow, the fireworks lasted about half an hour and then once they ended we pretty much packed up our gear and went home. Our friends came back with us to hang out until about midnight and then when they headed out, we headed to bed. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
