Plays Well With Others

Unexpected News…

I went for a late lunch today. Later than usual. I had some work on my desk and figured I’d get it done before leaving. So, I ended up heading out about 45 minutes later than usual.

When I got back, I noticed a voicemail on my phone and got that before taking on anything else. It was my supervisor asking me to meet with her as soon as I got back. I figured it had something to do with a job I was working on and went right over. She was on the phone, but gestured for me to wait, so I did.

Once off the phone, she said that we needed to meet with the departmental supervisor… meaning her boss. Erm. Okay, now I was feeling a little concerned. I’d never been called into her office before. What did I do?

As we walked over, a small group of people were walking towards us, seemingly out of this person’s office looking very upset. Ugh. Okay… to say I wasn’t scared shitless at this point would be an understatement of the grandest kind. I’ve seen those faces and been in those meetings before and nothing good comes out of them. Those are the same faces I saw the day I got laid off from my last job. Jesus.

So we get to the office and the big boss isn’t there, so my supervisor asks me to sit in there and wait for her to get back while she looks for her. Ugh. Okay, so I’m in there alone and I’m literally looking at everything on her desk to see if my name is on anything. Images of being fired, having to make house payments and pay for food and everything were dancing in my head… and I felt like I was going to hurl. Moments later my supervisor comes back and tells me that she can’t find the big boss and rather than having me sit there and wonder what’s going on, she’ll let me know the news…

Ugh.

A coworker passed away. A wave of varying emotions hit me all at once. I was relieved my ass wasn’t out of a job, but also sympathetic to the situation. The lady, in her late 60’s/early 70’s was at work on Thursday… I remember talking to her about some payroll stuff. She didn’t show up Friday and by Monday still hadn’t shown up. The police were called. The made entry and found her. It’s unfortunate. The news was being spread to everyone in our group, since we worked with her. People were also trying to find information on how to reach her family. There was no immediate information on how she passed away, but we were assured we’d be in the loop.

I’ve always wondered how it works when someone you work with passes away. Well now I know. It’s unfortunate. You work your entire life and just as you get near retirement age and can start enjoying your days off… you die. She didn’t even get to retire for God’s sake. And her family might not even know yet. Doesn’t that suck. You die and no one knows about it except for your job… because you didn’t show up one day.

Unfortunate indeed.
