Plays Well With Others

No Rest for the Weary…

We had a VERY busy weekend. One of the those weekends where you need an extra day just to recover. Insane. Fun, but busy.

Saturday we woke up early for a day at Paramount’s Great America. It’s a company day for my mom’s work, so we’ve done it every year for the last few. We actually opened the park and had to wait for some of the rides to get up and running. The first ride we hit was Top Gun, which is one of those rides you stand up on. It’s a good way to get your blood pumping and a good wakeup call. By the time that ride was done, some of the water rides had opened up… and with NO ONE in line, we hit those a few times. The new Boomerang Bay water park area was our first stop. We went on three water rafting things there. The first was a group raft, sort of like the rapids but without seats or anything. You just sit in this raft on the ground and it drops you like five or six stories. The other two were two person rafts that went down a water slide. Fun stuff, get there early and you’ll be set. By the end of the day we were all dried off.

After the water rides, we went to the picnic area where my mom’s company had a food spread set out for us. The day was pretty hot and sunny, so we sat outside and dried off while eating hotdogs, chicken sandwiches, beans and some ice cream sandwiches.

The rest of the day was spent on the rougher rides like the Vortex, Invertigo and although I don’t do them, my cousin and his girlfriend went on the Drop Zone, a 22-story fall straight down and Skyflyer, sort of like a two-person bungie that snaps you 60mph. Insane. My body can’t handle that shit anymore. As it was, by the end of the day, I was already feeling the aches and pains. Plus, even with sunscreen, I got a burn on my arms and legs. Ugh.

So I was looking forward to a more relaxing Sunday — a 50th birthday party for one of my cousins. It was being held at a house right on the water, which was really nice. There was a paddle boat, so my mom, my cousin’s girlfriend and I decided to go out on the water and paddle around. The area is basically a bunch of “islands” of houses with water surrounding them. So we decided to head around this one “island” and then head right back to the house we were at. The problem was that when we got around the island it sort of dead-ended and didn’t get us back to his house… so we had to paddle all the way back around the “island”. Ugh. We were tired as hell, hot because it was about 100 degrees out there and we had nothing covering us. It ended up that we were out there for an hour and they were starting to get worried that we’d gotten lost. Fun.

The rest of the day was pretty much just hanging out. Catching up with family and relaxing, which was a nice change from the day before. I also had a chance to hang with my 15 and 17 year old cousins, who crack me up. I used to spend all the holiday parties playing with them when they were little. They’d want to play “school” or “tea party” and I’d sit and play with them. I remember being a kid at a family gathering, it’s tough. All adults who really don’t want to play kid games. Anyhow, now they are grown up, but we still have fun, just on a different level.

Anyhow, that’s the weekend recap.
