Plays Well With Others

Presidential Promises…

In an election year, you expect to hear a lot of things said to get your vote. We all know to take them with a grain of salt. It’s unfortunate, but we usually end up voting for the person we dislike less, not for who we like more. That’s kind of my feeling about this election. I’d vote for Kerry, just because he’s NOT Bush. Ya know.

I love reading the excerpts written by Bush followers. They’ve got nothing but praise for the guy. I swear he could be Hitler and these blood born Republicans would find something good to say about the guy. For me, my vote is based on actions. The parties are kind of an afterthought for me. Even though I tend to vote down Democratic lines, I’d have no problem voting for a Republican if they did a decent job in the four years they were in office. Unfortunately for me, Bush hasn’t done a whole lotta anything in the four years he’s been in office, aside from fucking up everything Clinton did to fix what Bush Sr. screwed up. Clinton left four years ago, the economy was great, people had jobs and the budget was balanced. Four years later, well… look around.

Anyhow, what I’m getting to is that elections are about promising rainbows and pots of gold and then once they get in the office they do whatever they want to do anyhow. I keep reading all these articles and watching these commercials about John Kerry’s military record. His side says he’s a war hero with three purple hearts, Bushe’s camp says he’s full of shit. Then Kerry’s camp comes back with the fact that Bush was hiding out at home nowhere near the war. And it goes on and on. The problem with this is that all I’m hearing about is who did what during the Vietnam War and not so much about where they stand on issues that would affect me.

In fact, I’d be willing to bet that most younger people could care less about Vietnam. We just don’t care if you won one or three purple hearts. We don’t care if you weren’t even there. I just DON’T care. Sorry to all the vets out there, but it’s true. Younger people want a president that going to make sure there are jobs for all these kids getting out of college in the next few years, we want the schools to be properly funded, we want good health care and affordable housing. In my opinion, whether you saved someone on a swift boat or not, doesn’t really give me any clue on how you stand on certain issues that would affect me.

I think a lot of people are just disallusioned by the whole political process. They say a whole lot, without saying much of anything. By the time it’s time to vote, no one understands anything so they vote either down political lines or who they dislike least. My vote is for change. Bush had four year to prove himself and in my opinion, we’re worse off. We went to war to find “weapons of mass destruction” and never found any. He holds out 9/11 like a badge of honor, but hasn’t really done much to keep it from happening again. The Department of Homeland Security raises the “terror alert levels” whenever Bush needs a boost in his ratings…perhaps to scare people into supporting him. I don’t think the airports are any safer, in fact, Sen. Ted Kennedy is on the “no-fly” list. Hmm… makes you wonder who else is on that list. Bush has spent money building up our armed forces like Paris Hilton at a department store. There are less jobs now than when he got in office and the economy is limping along. So, although I’m not completely sure Kerry is the guy for the job, I certainly know Bush isn’t. So, I’m voting for change. Any change. Just someone different to see what he does. He certainly can’t make it worse.

All I ask… let’s get over the Vietnam thing already.
