Plays Well With Others

And the TV arrives…

About a decade ago, I replaced my thirteen inch color television with a 27-inch state of the art model. At least it was at the time. The thirteen incher had been given to my sister and I a few years earlier by our uncle. We’d each get the television in our rooms for a week and then pass it to the other the next week. No cable, no remote. In fact, the television could only accept about 13 different channels. Strange.

Anyhow, at the time that I got my 27-inch, I also bought a surround sound which began my interest in the home theater realm. At the time, that was my poor man’s version of a surround sound system but it was good enough for someone that had to have a home theater in the bedroom.

After ten years of a system that served me well, last year I bought a new receiver, with smaller wall mounted speakers. And this year we finally replaced the old 27-inch, which is still going strong, with a 34-inch widescreen. The only stipulation that Wifey™ gave me is that it had to fit inside of our existing television armoire. The armoire is 44 inches wide and the new television is 40 inches wide. I sucked out every available inch of space I possibly could and when the doors are closed, you’d never know we even had a TV.

The delivery fee was $35 from Best Buy. Not too shabby for a 160 lb. television that had to be hauled up a flight of stairs. We took it. They called on Friday to confirm the delivery, telling me that they’d arrive between 7-9am. My first thought was, “they’ll probably get there around 9 or later.” And so I got up a few minutes before 7. I’d just grabbed my clothes to change into when we heard the truck arrive… exactly at 7am. Ugh. So, I threw my clothes on as fast as I could and ran to the door as the guy was walking up. Within ten minutes or so, the HUGE box was in our living room and they were gone.

Wifey™ and I immediately opened the box and then had to figure out how exactly we were going to lift this very heavy and bulky set from the floor, up about four feet to the shelf in the armoire where it had to go. Somehow, we managed to get it up there and in without damaging anything. I hooked it up and about fifteen minutes later we were sitting there watching a movie. I had to do a few adjustments to the color and sound and whatnot, but overall it’s great.

Widescreen shows take up the entire width of the screen, while 4:3 shows have black bars on either side, which is fine. Also, the unit is HDTV ready, which means that eventually when HDTV is more readily available, we’ll be all set for it. Right now, it’s just not worth the extra costs associated with the upgrade. Eventually, the costs of service and extra equipment will come down to a level where ordinary people can afford it. Our digital quality DirecTv comes in great and once the receiver comes back from the manufacturer we’ll be in business. Plenty of input slots on the back and side for everything imaginable.

Sleek and nice… I can’t wait to watch our next movie on it.
