Plays Well With Others

Mensa

Look at the big brain on ME.

Took this Mensa test earlier for fun. I gave myself twenty minutes to answer whatever I could, without writing anything down, just to see what I knew. In the end I got 20 out of 30, leaving 4 blank and getting 6 wrong. What surprised me the most was that I got the math ones all correct and some of the ones dealing with words wrong.

20 out of 30 is considered a good score and indicates that you’d probably pass the Mensa test. Personally, I think it’s just to make you feel smart so you’ll pay them to take a real test. 🙂

Have fun, if you dare.

    I don’t get how 20 out of 30 is a “good score”. That’s a 66%, or a big fat D. 🙂

Wow Katie, you said you weren’t good at math. You can divide 20 by 30.

Well, I don’t think they’re grading the same way they do in high school. What the results actually said were “Your score was 20 out of 30. That is a very good score…” So maybe the fact that these are all considered Mensa questions, means they grade on a curve or something.

Anyhow, you’re supposed to give yourself 30 minutes. I don’t know if you’re allowed to write anything down, but I had to get out of here, so I had twenty minutes and did what I could in my head. The four I left blank I probably would’ve gotten if I had ten extra minutes and wrote it all down.

Anyhow, using the same criteria I used (don’t write anything down/twenty minutes) and being honest, let’s see how you do Katie.

Just getting one right is great at this point, since I haven’t been in school for AGES and half the time my brain doesn’t seem to be working.

Did a little research and it seems they grade these things on a bell curve, like I said earlier, because I’m smart like that. So there’s sort of a middle area where “most” people will answer correctly and then either side where you’re either above or below average in your responses.

So although something like 66% would be failing in a high school or community college type of class, on this type of test it means you did very well. You’re either going to fall into average, below average or above average. And it’s rare for people to fall into the very high or very low scores. So the mensa people are looking for those “very high” score people, while the short yellow bus is looking for those that fall in the “very low” areas. So, from what I can gather I’m in the “above average” area, which I’d imagine a good percentage of people I consider somewhat smart to fall into. Interesting.

As for mensa, well, the only benefit you get out of being a part of this group is “bragging rights” to say how smart you are, and maybe you get to attend some conventions or something. I’m going to take a stab in the dark here and say that I’d bet a lot of these people don’t have many friends, but they sure can solve a mean crossword puzzle.

Taking the online tests means very little since they’re just for fun. Since there’s no one sitting there timing you, it’s easy to take extra time or have someone help, and even easier to fudge the final numbers, but then that’d just be pathetic. It’s really about being honest with yourself.

At this point, I won’t be joining mensa anytime soon. I’ll bet half these people can’t balance their checkbooks.

Jesus. Somebody gets a 66% on the Mensa test and suddenly he’s a genius. 🙂

Yeah, they are probably like Einstein… genius level, but they don’t know their ass from their elbow half the time. Didn’t he have to paint his front door bright red, so he’d actually be able to FIND his house. Good lord.

    I wouldn’t say “genius”… let’s just go for “gifted”. 🙂
