Got Gas?

Exxon Mobil Chairman

Someone try to tell me that this guys smug grin doesn’t just get under your skin, when you find out that he’s the Chairman of Exxon Mobil and just reported record profits. In fact, their third quarter profits increased by 75% to $9.92 billion. Ugh. Other gas companies are giving the same kind of news in a time when we’re paying record prices at the pump. Prices have certainly come down a little bit, but I still think there’s PLENTY of room for improvement.

The only plus is the many members of Congress are now looking into price gouging and basically saying that these companies need to reinvest their profits into their infrastructure so that they can refine more gas and keep prices low. Who knows what the end result will be. All I know is that I just got gas this morning, paid over $30 to fill the tank and then opened up my browser to see this guys smug grin.

Ugh. To be honest, he looks like he belongs on the short bus.

Of course, on the flip side of the issue are the millions of Americans who’ve spent the last 15 years racing each other to buy the biggest, least efficient SUV. Yeah, it’s unfortunate that gas prices have climbed up so high, but it strikes me as pretty disingenuous to go out of your way buying vehicles that force you to put more money in these guys’ pockets, and then start bitching when their profits skyrocket. If people want to reduce outrageous oil profits, it rather seems to me the best solution would be to stop giving them your money.

Also, just to clarify, the “you”s in that last comment are indefinite. I’m remarking on those people as a group, not trying to bag on you specifically. 😉

    I gotcha. 🙂

I agree. I don’t understand people who buy a Hummer as a commuter vehicle. Everyday I see people driving these mamoth SUV’s?¢‚Ǩ‚Äùone person in the car?¢‚Ǩ‚Äùto and from work.

My wife and I have ONE car. It can be tough for us when we each need to do things on our own, but for now it suits our needs and finances. Personally, I think if you drive a huge SUV, you deserve to have to spend a fortune keeping it running. But for the rest of us that try to conserve where we can, it’s just not fair. As much as we try to conserve, these greedy people will just use as much fuel as they possibly can… because they can.

Unfortunately, we can’t just stop giving them money because the only way to make our car move is to put fuel into it. They pretty much have us by the balls, unless we want to give up our car altogether and ride bikes. I think more and more people, though, are looking at Hybrids as a great alternative. We’re certainly one of them.
