Bringing back the Merry…

Apparently, just in time for Target to start saying “Happy Holidays” rather than the traditional “Merry Christmas”, stores like Macy’s, Bloomingdales and Lowe’s are actually bringing back the “Merry Christmas” message in their ads and signage. It’s a quiet comeback, but it’s there. Macy’s even has a TV spot airing that has a song mentioning Christmas—not just the happy holidays.

Apparently, consumers, along with the Catholic League, are pushing stores to recognize that December 25th is called Christmas and is the reason most people are spending money at this time of year. Also some stores have signage mentioning Kwanzaa and Hannukah, but then omit Christmas from their marketing all together.

So now what. I tend to say “Happy Holidays” if I’m sending out holiday cards just because the people who are receiving them are of different religions and I certainly don’t want to have to make multiple versions of a holiday card. At the same time, I can certainly recognize that if a store is going to have a Hannukah section and a Kwanzaa section in their stores, they should also have a Christmas section. In my opinion, it needs to be an all or nothing type of deal. If you’re going to refer to it as the “Holidays” then keep it generic throughout. If you’re going to mention one, then you need to mention all of them.

Actually, I recently heard a commercial with some holiday music in the background and the singers are singing a very “Christmas-y” song but the words have been changed and instead their singing “Happy Merry Kwanz-anukah-istmas” which pretty much sums up what this time of the year has become. Just a big jumbled mess. Ugh.

So yeah, Happy Merry Kwanz-anukah-istmas to you all.

What do you expect from those types of Christians? Like they give a damn about anybody else but themselves? They celebrate Christmas, so everybody in the world should have to say “Merry Christmas” because it’s all about THEM.
