The Worst President—Ever…

The distinction of “Worst President” in the history of the United States has always been given to James Buchanan. The reasons include the fact that his indecisiveness may have the Civil War inevitable and that his administration was the most corrupt in history. He also accepted the legality of Kansas’ pro-slavery constitution and accepted a Supreme Court ruling in the Dred Scott case saying that slaves were not people, but property.

Most historians agree that these facts, along with some others, make him the worst President in the history of the United States. Well, until now. Some historians are now saying that President Bush will be remembered as the worst president in our lifetime and, may, be a close second to the worst in history—if not, THE worst.

Four hundred and fifteen historians answered a survey and 338 said they felt Bush was failing, 77 felt he was succeeding. And 50 said they thought he was the worst EVER.

The historians used the following facts about the Bush record to backup their claims:

1. He has taken the country into an unwinnable war and alienated friend and foe alike in the process;
2. He is bankrupting the country with a combination of aggressive military spending and reduced taxation of the rich;
3. He has deliberately and dangerously attacked separation of church and state;
4. He has repeatedly “misled,” to use a kind word, the American people on affairs domestic and foreign;
5. He has proved to be incompetent in affairs domestic (New Orleans) and foreign ( Iraq and the battle against al-Qaida);
6. He has sacrificed American employment (including the toleration of pension and benefit elimination) to increase overall productivity;
7. He is ignorantly hostile to science and technological progress;
8. He has tolerated or ignored one of the republic’s oldest problems, corporate cheating in supplying the military in wartime.

They did agree, though, that it is too early to evaluate a president, which tends to take decades. For now, Buchanan is still on top as the worst ever.
