Plays Well With Others

81…

My Grandma turned 81 this month. That’s a long time. Wifey™ and I decided that we’d do a little something special for her by inviting her over for an early dinner out and then dessert afterwards. She lives with my aunt, so they’re a package deal. I called my Grandma the other day to see if she’d be available and the call was as entertaining as they usually are:

ME: Hey, I hear you celebrated a birthday recently?
GMA: Yep, I’m 81. Not too bad, I can still walk, so I’m doing pretty good.
ME: Wifey™ and I wanted to have you over to our house to celebrate. Are you available on Sunday?
GMA: Well we’re doing something on Saturday… let me check with (Aunt) to see if Sunday will work?
ME: Okay.

[checks with Aunt]

GMA: Okay, we’re available.
ME: Great, we’re going to take you out to lunch at a Mexican restaurant up the street and then we can have dessert afterwards.
GMA: You don’t have to take me out, just make a sandwich.
ME: That’s okay, we’ll take you out.
GMA: Okay, I can get an encheelahdee (sic) or something.
ME: Alright.

GMA: Is this going to be dressy?
ME: Yeah, black tie. Be sure to wear your formal.
GMA: Maybe you should just make sandwiches.
ME: I’m kidding. Just wear your jeans or whatever comfortable clothes you have.
GMA: Oh, okay.
ME: Yeah, see you Sunday.

Going out to eat at a place other than Taco Bell is considered “fancy” by my Grandma. It’s the cloth napkins. And the waiters. My grandparents didn’t really go out to eat much. In fact, when they did, it was always at the same restaurant. My Grandpa liked to go to a place where they knew him by name and where he knew the food. So they always went to the same restaurant a couple of blocks from their house. And they always dressed up. The place was a hole in the wall.

When Mother’s Day rolls around, my father will head over and ask my Grandma where she wants to go and she’ll always reply, “Taco Bell”. She likes their tacos and burritos. Simple pleasures. Mention Taco Bell and her eyes light up.
