Plays Well With Others

Sex In The City (of San Francisco)…

The biggest headlines these days in San Francisco is the sex scandal between the mayor and his aides wife. It happened a couple of years ago and just came out recently. It’s all over Fox News and the Republicans are biting into this story hard… because I guess they have nothing else.

Reports include lines like, “he’s ruined his political career” and “the only person this hurts more than the mayor is Nancy Pelosi”. Erm. Was Nancy there too? Did I miss something? I suppose they have San Francisco in common. And news agencies are trying to make a connection that “San Francisco values” will be playing a big part in both of their careers. Of course, I don’t really think a mayor can represent an entire city’s values—especially one as diverse as San Francisco.

Here’s what they have on the mayor—he’s 39 and single, he’s had a series of girlfriends, he’s been through a messy divorce, he’s been shown being affectionate in public and he’s been seen drinking at local bars and bistros—which kind of sounds like a lot of single guys. And the latest is that he had an affair with his friend’s wife. And now he’s made a public apology.

Like I said with Clinton, what he does on his own time isn’t really something I’m concerned with. His job is to serve the City and as long as he’s doing a good job running the city that’s my primary concern. I don’t agree with the fact that he had an affair, but sex scandals have happened before to people like Rudy Giuliani, who’s now running for President, and to Newt Gingrich and Edward Kennedy. The point is that people make mistakes.

I think the only reason this has become such a huge story is because of irresponsible news agencies like Fox News who are obviously biased and Republican politicians who have sour grapes over losing the last election. They needed something and San Francisco’s mayor gave it to them. Does the rest of the country even care?

Personally, I think he’s a young up and comer that has a lot of potential to make it big in politics. San Francisco is fairly open-minded and would rather focus on how their City is being managed than what their mayor is doing once he punches out for the day. I’m hoping that this will all blow over fairly quickly and we can all move on to more important things. He was voted into office because he was young and had a different point of view. He’s bucked the system by allowing gay marriage when others wouldn’t.

Who knows, maybe people do care?
