Plays Well With Others

Celebrity Justice…

Typically I don’t weigh in on these types of matters, but this time, even I’m pretty insulted about the whole Paris Hilton ordeal. We all know that the rich and priviledged get special treatment whether it’s getting a table at a restaurant or serving time in jail.

I think what irks me the most is that the judge specifically ordered her to spend time in jail, do not pass “GO” or collect $200. There’d be no “pay jail” option, there’d be no option to spend time at home. The judge wanted her to learn a lesson the good, old fashioned way—just like real people do.

After being ordered to do something like 45 days in “special needs” section of the jail, it was almost immediately reduced to half that. Okay, it’s not optimal, but at least she’d do some time in jail and get to experience what everyone else experiences.

She spent the first night and things were going okay, according to most media sources. She was bored and cold, but it IS jail and not a Hilton hotel. By the second day, we weren’t hearing too much about it, but by the third day it was making headlines again when, unbelievably, Paris was released from jail for “medical conditions” and sent to her multi-million dollar, 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom mansion in the Hollywood Hills to do the rest of her sentence. Poor thing. Satin sheets, down comforters, jet spa tubs and flat screen TVs. It’s got to be tough.

Well, the judge and the DA heard about this arrangement and are PISSED, and are taking names. Typically a “medical condition” isn’t enough to get you out of jail, since they have a medical team in the facility that take care of inmates with cancer, AIDS and severe heart problems. I’m not sure that a little herpes or depression qualifies as a reason to get out of jail. Of course, I don’t really know what her “medical condition” is, but somehow she’s managed to get through life with it.

Anyhow, it’s annoying to see the celebrity justice that goes on. Most folks wouldn’t have even been given the opportunities that she’s received. They be sitting in jail and rotting away and no one would care. There’d be no special cell or confinement, they’d just be tossed in with the rest of the population.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens at 9AM, when Paris has been ordered to attend a special hearing to determine whether she’s getting thrown back into the slammer.

Update 8:45AM: I’m reading now that the “medical reasons” were related to the fact that she was crying constantly, couldn’t sleep or eat, and found the prison cold and noisy. The decision was made after consulting a doctor and psychologist. Erm. Isn’t that kind of the point of prison? To be uncomfortable and to not really be happy about it. I think there’s something about learning a lesson in there.

Update 12:30PM: And she’s back in jail. Now we’re talking.
