Plays Well With Others

This Entry: During the hiatus – Day 5

I was summoned for jury duty today. Well, I was actually summoned today, the summation came about a month ago, but today was the day to serve my public duty as an american. Basically, I’m called every year, and have never had to actually step into a court or serve on a jury. In a way, I’m kind of bummed out about it. Anyhow, how the process goes in my area, is that you have to call a number the night before and see when you have to go in or any other information. So, I called last night and was told that the people chosen for my group were put on telephone standby. Its exactly what it sounds like, you have to stand by your phone and call them around noon on the day of your summation and see if they need you.

I spend all morning doing web things, kept my cellphone nearby in case my job called and basically sat around until noon to call the court house. So, when I called the court house they told me I was excused and wouldnt be called again for a year. Figures. I spend the whole day at home waiting for this thing and they dont need me. Luckily I dont lose pay, and this was a really nice day.

The arm on my glasses has been broken for a few weeks now. It’s not so much the arm, as it is the brown plastic piece on the end of the arm. It basically falls off. So, since my sister works for an eye doctor I decided to stop by and get it fixed. While the doctor was putting a new arm on, I couldn’t resist trying all the glasses in his office on. I dont know why, but there is this temptation to try on all the glasses frames on, even the really humongous ones, just to see what I would look like. I know everyone does it. It’s sort of like going through someones drawers or closet and putton on their shoes or something, when you are little kid.

I know my sister and I would always put on our grandparents shoes, just because they were so huge and different. Anyhow, the arm on my glasses are fixed now. I dont think I have an photos of me with them on, but they are mostly for driving and seeing things far away.

You all know about my affiliation with the television show, Freaks and Geeks. I’m sure you are all sick of hearing about it, so I wont bore you. Just that last night the show was on, after quite a long break. Anyhow, today was pretty cool because I was interviewed by a writer for UltimateTV.com, for use in a story she is doing. I’ve been talking to different reporters about the show, and am beginning to feel a little like a celebrity of sorts. Nothing I ever wanted in my life, but if it helps something I’ll do it. So, you might see my little ole name in a report and I’ll be sure to tell you all about it, not like you care, but more so I can feel extra special.

I’ve decided to use my old computer as a web server. I dont know if it’ll actually work, or how far I’ll get, but I thought it would be cool to try to set up a web server in my house. More like a hobby than anything else, and eventually maybe I’ll have my own server. I actually went to a bookstore and bought a book on setting up a Mac Web server. So this should be kind of cool to say the least. Now I just have to find two seconds of free time to actually do it.

I was just thinking today that for a large portion of my life, the web/internet didnt exist. I mean there really wasn’t much technology out there when I was born. I got my first computer in the 80’s, and that one was only good for word processing, spreadsheets and databases, and playing games. not until the early 90’s did I get into the web and not even the real web, more just using America Online, which I still have as a backup. I finally moved to the real web in the mid-90’s, when I learned very basic web design and started using Netscape. The reason I bring this up is mainly from talking with the reporter at UltimateTV, when she asked how my involvement with the show would be different if the internet didnt exist. I gasped, and thought maybe I just wouldnt be involved. Where would I start?

It also made me realize how many really cool people Ive met over the years, who are just online. Most of which I’ve never met in person, but we get along like close friends. We can be different ages, different nationalities, and live in different parts of the world, but we find things we have in common and can chat it up. I think that’s really neat, and am very happy to be able to enjoy this time of my life. I mean most of us are fortunate enough to be young enough to actually enjoy the technology that is out there. My mom can barely turn the computer on, let alone use a chat feature, or get around the web and meet people. She has too much fear of “perverts” or people who might steal her information to understand the fact that not everyone online is a pervert. I can’t make her understand that she’s online and she’s not a pervert, so why wouldn’t she think other people like her would be on there. The fact of the matter is that she’s just too old to enjoy it. So, I’m really happy I can enjoy the technology we have and of course turn it off when it gets boring.

Well, thanks for your time and I’ll keep you all in the loop. By the way, I signed up for a DSL connection last night, because I’m having a stroke with the slowness of my modem.
