Plays Well With Others

Silly Love Songs…

It’s crazy how music can affect us. I grew up with it. My mom used to blast it in our Mustang growing up. I still do, when I’m alone. Sometimes songs can just transport you straight back to a time or place that you haven’t thought about for years. The song comes on and suddenly your brain clicks a few times and you’re driving down that same freeway you were driving down twenty years ago. Or you’re reliving that school dance with your friends, or you’re remembering the heart break of your first childhood crush. It all comes back.

I have a few trigger songs, one of which I just heard a second ago, called “Eye in the Sky” by Alan Parsons Project. The same with Air Supply, Hall & Oates and Chicago. Songs by those groups bring me back to long highway rides across the Golden Gate Bridge from our home in Petaluma to visit my grandparents. We’d make the trek every couple of weeks, since my mom worked in San Francisco. The rides would last about an hour and my mom had a handful of 8-tracks in the car that we could listen to. Just because of their shear size, we could only bring a few with us and still have room in the car for the rest of our stuff. Good times.

There are plenty of other songs, most of which I’ve downloaded onto my iTunes, that can transport me back to specific places in my life. I guess they’re comfort songs. They help me remember the good times… and there have been plenty. Songs that remind me of a childhood home, or long lost friends or experiences. Sometimes it’s nice just to go for a long car ride, jack the volume way up and immerse yourself in those memories through music.
