Plays Well With Others

The party is over … or

The party is over … or is it just starting?

Well, my three month work hiatus has officially ended. On January 10th, I was laid off from my job at Snowball.com and on April 9th, roughly ten months later, I’ll be starting my new job. And a new chapter begins. Also, hopefully more updates will follow, if anyone actually reads this anymore.

The last few months have been a whirlwind. I’ve spent my days in front of the computer screen looking up jobs on Dice.com, Headhunter.com, Monster.com and YahooCareers.com. I’ve sent out hundreds of email resumes and recieved about a quarter of those as responses. I’ve checked the Snowball stock ticker practically daily, evily hoping to see that number drop by a few percent everyday. I’ve checked FuckedCompany.com, hoping to get some more news on more dotcom failures. It’s been a thrill.

On Thursday, I received a call from a company in Sacramento, about two hours from where I currently live making me an offer. Its a ten year old publishing company, looking to expand in the next year. They need a designer on staff to work on their publications and trade show stuff and it looked like an interesting place to work. Unfortunately it would mean relocating to an area that wouldnt offer much promise of me finding another job should I lose that one. It’s a rural area, filled with farmland, being built up by the day, but being from a big city, I just couldnt see myself every feeling totally comfortable. However, without any other offers in sight, I accepted their offer and began the process of collecting boxes to get my apartment packed up in a week and moved in two.
As day turned to night, I got a call from a previous interview asking me for a second interview. I decided that it couldnt hurt to go.

Friday and the weekend came and I held off on packing to find out the results of the Monday interview and when it came I’d find out that they were also interested in me. The offer from them came on Tuesday. This place is a publisher of medical publications and software and I’d be working in the marketing department. I’d have a good balance of print and web and more importantly, they offer more money and better benefits. Also, it would mean not moving. All good signs. Of course, I accepted.

Now, came the challenge of having accepted two jobs in two different parts of California. There is no possible way I can be in two places at the same time … unless I’m David Blane or something. Anyhow, today I attempted to reach the President of the first company and he’s out of town. So, I did the next best thing … maybe the chicken thing … I sent an email turning his job down. Now I just have to wait for a call back hearing him go balistic … or maybe not. Who knows.

Anyhow, I’m ready to move on and start making money. The $1000 a month in unemployment was nice, but nowhere near what I need to live a comfortable life in the Bay Area. And so 2001 continues. At least it will be memorable. My first day being engaged was on 01/01/01 and on 01/10/01 I was laid off … on 04/09/01 I’ll begin my new job and on 08/10/01 we’re hoping Wifey™ will begin her move here … and on 10/06/01 I’ll get married … and then life will continue …
