Plays Well With Others

Those whacky kids …

Kids always seem to find a way to amuse themselves, whether at home or on the playground. I was known for always touching things and pulling levers. It was fun and I always got in trouble later. I was the kid always getting the speech before entering any store. “Greg, dont touch anything, keep your hands in your pockets”. One time I even climbed a pole in front of my grandmothers house and pulled the little lever, which set off alarms and eventually resulted in a visit from the fire department. I thought it was fun, unfortunately it didnt go over as well for everyone else.

Of course, as I got older, I found that pulling levers was nothing compared to what other kids could come up with. One day on the playground, I noticed a big bunch of kids gathered around another kid. Intrigued, I went over and found out that he was charging people a buck to pull out his glass eye and show it to them. Ugh. Like I said there was a group of kids willing to give up their lunch money to see this guys glass eye popped out of his head.

I also remember coming to school on a Monday to hear that a couple of my classmates had gotten married over the weekend. Usually this would have been great news, except for the fact that we were in second grade at the time. Seems they had a “pretend” marriage or something and had invited a bunch of their friends to witness it.

Of course, moving from elementary school to middle school was a bit more eye opening. The first day of middle school trying to find our classes, we encountered two girls beating the living crap out of each other. They were pulling hair, clothes, punching, scratching … cat fight is definately a good term for what this was. Welcome to school …

My favorite memory though happened in high school during lunch time. Everything was going pretty well, until someone got mad at someone else and threw their lunch at them. Well, that’s all it took before the entire cafeteria was in the middle of food fight. The group I sat with watched for the first few moments before things got WAY out of control. People started screaming and running out the cafeteria, and all hell broke loose. We climbed under the table and waited it out.. and after about five minutes it had ended. Of course half the people in their were covered in some sort of mashed potato, milk and green jello mixture, but it was fun to watch.

As you get older you find that things like this happen less and less, until you reach the point where they don’t happen at all … sometimes its fun being young.
