Plays Well With Others

Get Your FREE iPod…

Get a FREE iPod. What’s the catch? This weekend Wifey™ and I did a little Christmas shopping and at one of the stores, the cashier tells Wifey™ to go pick out her FREE cashmere scarf. Wifey™’s immediate response is one of distrust, “What do I have to sign up for?”. The cashier responds, “Nothing, it’s FREE”. Oh. Everything has a price… nothing worthwhile is free. Well, except for a scarf, if you spend some dough in their store. Any purchase, as little as a buck, will get you a scarf valued at about $35.

So back to the FREE iPod. What’s the scam? Well, it’s quite simple. The site acts as a front door to get people to sign up for offers and in return they send you a FREE iPod. The offers are pretty simple: credit cards, music and dvds and even a newspaper subscription. Then you get a few more people to join and a few weeks later you’re listening to your MP3’s on your new and, did I mention, FREE iPod. There are stories all over the web about people actually receiving their FREE iPod and showing pictures as proof.

So, why would a company give away a $200 MP3 player in exchange for you signing up for a credit card or even worse, a $7 CD from the Video Professor. Well, it’s all about the traffic. These “sponsors” are probably paying primo just to appear on this page for that real estate on your screen. It’s all about the metrics, baby. Traffic equals dollars.

So, I’ll stick a link on my page and see how it goes. It’s not a free scarf, but even getting a partly FREE iPod would be worth it. If not, well, it’s not like I paid for anything in the first place.

Anyhow… sign up for your FREE iPod and see how it goes.
