Plays Well With Others

Embracing Your Feminine Side…

Tuesday is our department’s holiday party—a potluck extravaganza. Anyhow, as usual, they send around a sign-up list so you can write down what you’re going to bring to the potluck. They don’t keep you from joining if you don’t sign up, but I have this feeling those signup sheets are being stored away somewhere. Regardless, most of us are bringing something.

What caught me kind of as funny on Monday was when I first walked in to work, one of the guys came up and asked me what I was bringing. I didn’t think much of it and told him I was making a banana bread for the party. He mentioned that he was bringing a ham and that’s about the extent of the conversation. About an hour later, another guy comes up and asks what I’m bringing and around the same time the ham guy comes up also. I tell the first guy that I’m bringing banana bread, he tells me he’s making a cheese fondue and the third guys chimes in with his ham. Next thing you know, there’s this discussion going on about how the ham will be made, basted, etc. Then the fondue guy starts talking about how he’s making the fondue and before you know I’m feeling a little bit, well, GAY.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but there’s just something a little weird about a bunch of guys standing around swapping recipes and sharing cooking tips. Certainly the modern male is all about equality and embracing his feminine side and being okay with it, but there’s a time and a place now people.

So yeah, we’ll be having some spiral sliced, glazed ham, some fresh banana bread and some cheesy fondue. Maybe the next step is to take a floral arranging class and start doing each other’s nails. Ugh.
