Plays Well With Others

Easy Come, Easy Go…

Recently I wrote about getting a GPS unit for the car. I tend to get lost pulling out of the driveway and don’t get me started trying to drive anywhere without some MapQuest directions printed out. The GPS navigation unit is a Garmin product, and is very easy to use. You plug in the address of where you want to go, or choose from the pre-loaded list of nearby locations and the “voice” navigates you to the location. Very cool. And if you take a wrong turn, it thinks about it for a few seconds and gets you back on track almost instantly.

Now typically, the only time I take it off the window when we park in shady part of the City or an area where I’m not too familiar.  Seemed like a smart idea.

So yesterday, I head to my car at lunchtime and after hopping inside, notice that something seemed a little different.  My car was parked in the parking garage at work—a place with video surveillance galor.  Yet somehow, someone managed to get into my locked car and steal the navigation unit, along with the suction cup thing that was attached to the window and the power cable.  Nice.

Now, I’ve had stuff stolen before so my reaction is a little on the non-reactionary side at this point.  Kind of like, “damn”.  I’m glad they didn’t try to tear the car apart or even steal the car.  The bright side of the things.  It sucks that they stole this little gadget that made my life a little easier, but maybe they were lost and needed a little direction in their life.

They won’t really be able to do much with it other than use it in the Bay Area, since I only loaded local maps on it. And they won’t be able to load more, since you need the special code that I have at home.  Perhaps there’s a way around that.  And when they push the “Go Home” button, well, they’ll end up at my house instead of theirs.

Easy come, easy go.  I think we may end up purchasing a replacement and just not leave it in the car.  Or store it in Doritos bag in the back seat so no one will know what the hell it is.
