Plays Well With Others

On Ordering a Chair …

On the workfront, I’m in a battle to get a new desk chair. Seems simple enough. Call up facilities, tell them you need a new chair and poof, one appears at your desk. Erm. NOT. Well, that’s how it was at my last job, where we all had $1000 Aaron chairs. Comfortable as hell. No one complained about their chairs. If I could have, I’d have taken it with me.

Now, however, I’m at a company that thrives on beaurocracy. The more paperwork and hoops they can think of to make people jump through, the better. Ugh.

So, last Friday I sent an email to our department facilitator — the person in charge of getting us stuff, because, GOD forbid we email facilities directly — to let her know that I’m in need of a new desk chair. Mine has no back support. Actually it has a back to it that adjusts up and down, but no matter where I move it to, some part of my back is exposed and ends up in pain. So my request was for a chair with a complete back to it, rather than a chair with a small back.

Tuesday, I get a reply that in order for them to help me out I’ll need to go online and do their ergonomics training. Ugh. Unless someone is going to pop out of my computer with a new chair, this just isn’t going to make a difference. But, to oblige them, I go through the half hour course on company time. It basically gives you info on how to sit, how to adjust your keyboard and monitor, blah blah blah. Then it gets to the part on how to adjust your chair. About how not to rest your arms on the armrests when typing and how to adjust the lumbar support. Erm. Except, I dont have a lumbar support. I barely have a seat back. Lower on the page, it says that if you don’t have a lumbar support, you can ball up a towel and tie or tape it to the chair to keep your back aligned. Erm. What the fuck do I look like, Tim the Toolman?? Like, I’m going to bust out a beach towel at work, ball it up and strap it to my office chair. Ugh. Not.

So, today I emailed the lady back telling her that I took the training course and still need a chair. I also mentioned that balling up a beach towel on my chair wasn’t my idea of good back support and that I’d probably end up injuring myself and end up on disability.

I haven’t heard back yet, so the chair drama continues …
