Sorry, No Referrals Available…
This weekend I found out the little print shop I worked at a million years ago is gone. I always check it out when I’m in the area, and this weekend there was a “For Lease” sign on the empty building. How sad.
Even sadder though is that with this place no longer in existence, that means that every place I’ve ever worked out doesn’t exist in the same form they did when I worked there. Some were bought out, some were renamed, and this one just went out of business. So if you take a look at my resume, you’d see a list of names that don’t exist anymore. The grocery store—bought out and renamed. The printshop—gone. The magazine publisher—consolidated and took on another name. The dot-com—downsized and took on a new name.
Yeah, so when a future employer asks me for references I could just say, “well, there are none”. Luckily, I’m always two steps ahead and have kept in touch with quite a few people I’ve worked with in the past and have references galore—most of whom left those companies a LONG time ago themselves. Just one other good reason you don’t piss on your former coworkers.
